Basin NDT inspects fishing and recovery tools — evaluating bodies, engagement surfaces, wear surfaces, and connections before a tool goes back to work. We do not perform fishing operations, provide crews, recover tools, or rent or supply equipment. Our role is to document the tool's condition so repair, disposition, and return-to-service decisions can be made with current information.

Timing

Why Inspection Matters Between Runs

Fishing and recovery tools can see high tensile load, torque, impact, bending, vibration, and repeated engagement attempts during a single job.

A tool that came back usable from the last run is not automatically ready for the next one. Damage can accumulate without producing an obvious functional failure in the yard.

Between runs is the practical moment to evaluate condition: the tool is accessible, the schedule still has flexibility, and repair, replacement, or selection decisions can be made without adding pressure to an already critical operation.

What We Look For

Common Conditions and Relevant Indications

Inspection evaluates accessible and — where the method permits — near-surface and internal areas for relevant indications. Findings are documented and evaluated against the applicable acceptance criteria; they do not by themselves establish serviceability.

  • Fatigue cracking at section changes, cross-holes, and stress concentrations
  • Mechanical damage — gouges, nicks, and impact marks on bodies and engagement surfaces
  • Galling and thread damage on connections
  • Wear and wall loss on engagement and wear surfaces
  • Corrosion and pitting
  • Heat-related indications from friction or jarring
  • Repair-related discontinuities in blended, machined, or welded areas

Process

Typical Inspection Workflow

1Scope and history. We start with the tool type, service history, known damage, and the recovery the tool is being prepared for, so inspection effort focuses on the most consequential areas.
2Visual screening. An inspector examines accessible surfaces, connections, and engagement features for visible damage, wear, and conditions that warrant further evaluation.
3Surface and near-surface examination. Wet fluorescent MT is applied to suitable ferromagnetic bodies and engagement surfaces; visible dye PT is used only where material, surface condition, access, and procedure make it appropriate.
4Volumetric examination where suitable. UT is applied to body and wear-surface areas where material, geometry, and access permit a reliable examination.
5Evaluation. Findings are evaluated against the applicable acceptance criteria. Basin does not make a final serviceability call on its own — that decision belongs to the customer or the party responsible for the equipment.
6Documentation. Results are captured in a documented inspection record describing what was examined, what was found, and the equipment identification tied to the inspection.

Every inspection produces a documented record that connects findings to the correct tool and location. Where connected to the customer account and inspection workflow, results may be made available through Basin's customer-facing reporting platform.

Inspection scope is selected based on the tool's material, geometry, access, service history, and the recovery it is being prepared for. Not every method applies to every tool. Basin will confirm what inspection scope fits your equipment before work begins.
