Visual testing (VT) is the most fundamental non-destructive examination. Before any instrument is coupled or particle applied, a trained inspector examines the part — evaluating surface condition, workmanship, visible damage, wear, corrosion, deformation, and dimensional observations against the customer’s requirements and acceptance criteria.

VT does not detect subsurface conditions. It identifies visible conditions that may warrant measurement, additional NDT, repair evaluation, or disposition. In an inspection program, visual examination helps direct other methods and focuses inspection effort where it is most relevant.

We perform VT as a direct examination of oilfield tools and components, evaluated against applicable customer requirements, procedures, and acceptance criteria.

Why visual testing comes first

VT is the screening step that supports the rest of an inspection program. A component that arrives dirty, damaged, or dimensionally out of tolerance may need to be cleaned, gauged, or flagged before MT, PT, or UT can be meaningfully applied. Visual examination identifies areas that warrant further evaluation and conditions that require attention before additional methods are used.

What inspectors look for

  • Visible indications at weld toes, threads, and stress-concentration features
  • Galling, deformation, and impact damage on shoulders and sealing faces
  • Wear patterns and wall-loss observations on tubulars and wear surfaces
  • Corrosion, pitting, and scaling that may warrant additional NDT
  • Weld bead condition, undercut, spatter, and fit-up observations
  • Dimensional and alignment observations against specified tolerances
  • Thread condition on connections
  • General workmanship and surface cleanliness against the acceptance criteria

Dimensional and alignment verification

Where the inspection scope includes it, visual testing covers dimensional and alignment verification against the specified tolerances. Depending on the scope, this may involve direct dimensional measurement of critical features, fit-up or alignment checks, and comparison with the applicable requirements using the appropriate gauges.

API thread gauging is performed under the appropriate procedure when requested, verifying pitch diameter, taper, and lead on rotary shouldered connections to support connection integrity on drill pipe, drill collars, and BHA components. Dimensional results are recorded against the specified criteria and reported with the inspection.

How VT supports other NDT methods

VT rarely stands alone in an inspection program. It helps identify where to apply MT for a suspect weld toe, where to couple UT for a thinned area, and whether a surface is suitable for PT. It also identifies visible conditions that may warrant measurement, additional NDT, repair evaluation, or disposition. In that sense, VT is both a method and a planning step that supports MT, PT, UT, and ET.

Limitations

VT evaluates only what is visible and accessible with adequate lighting. It does not detect subsurface conditions and will not identify a tight surface crack that another method may reveal. Surface preparation, access, and lighting affect what can be observed. Findings are evaluated against the specified criteria rather than establishing serviceability on their own.

  • As the first step of an inspection program, before additional NDT
  • Before redeployment
  • After retrieval from service
  • Following machining, repair, or welding
  • During scheduled fleet inspection intervals
  • When a component’s condition or history raises questions for evaluation

Depending on the method and scope, inspection documentation may include equipment identification, observed surface conditions, measured dimensions where included in the inspection scope, and workmanship findings evaluated against the applicable requirements and acceptance criteria.
