Rotary Shoulder Connection Inspection

Basin NDT inspects rotary shouldered connections — evaluating box and pin threads, sealing and torque shoulders, and related connection features before equipment goes back to service. We do not machine, re-thread, re-cut, repair, or sell connections or pipe. Our role is to document connection condition and geometry so accept, re-cut, and reject decisions can be made with current information.

Rotary shouldered connections are evaluated by the features that carry load and define engagement — not as a single generic part. Where material, geometry, access, and procedure permit, Basin examines the thread and shoulder areas that matter most for the connection's next service.

  • External and internal threads — box and pin
  • Sealing and torque shoulders
  • Thread roots, crests, and flanks
  • Seal faces and shoulder-face condition
  • Thread start and runout
  • Galled, re-cut, or reworked thread areas

Why It Matters

Why Connection Condition Matters

A rotary shouldered connection transfers torque and axial load through a precisely manufactured thread system and an engaged shoulder. If the thread form or shoulder is compromised, the connection may not make up correctly or carry load as intended.

Connections cycle through repeated make-up and break-out, high torque, bending, vibration, and contact with mating components. Damage and fatigue can accumulate between inspections without an obvious functional failure in the yard.

Condition is easiest to evaluate when the connection is accessible and the schedule still has flexibility — before redeployment, after a demanding run, or as part of a recurring program that builds a documented condition history across a fleet.

What We Look For

Common Conditions and Relevant Indications

Inspection evaluates accessible thread and shoulder areas for relevant indications. Findings are documented and evaluated against the applicable acceptance criteria; they do not by themselves establish that a connection is acceptable.

  • Galling and metal transfer on threads or shoulders
  • Damaged thread form — torn, smeared, or rolled threads
  • Cracking at thread roots and stress concentrations
  • Shoulder damage, wash, or uneven shoulder contact
  • Pitting, corrosion, and surface breaking indications
  • Fatigue cracking from repeated make-up and loading
  • Re-cut or repaired thread areas requiring re-qualification
  • Dimensional nonconformance found by gauging

Gauging

API Thread Gauging

Where applicable to the connection and scope, Basin performs API thread gauging to evaluate connection geometry. Gauging measures whether the thread system meets the applicable dimensional requirements — it does not detect cracks or other discontinuities, which require an appropriate NDT method.

  • Lead

Gauging evaluates geometry — not integrity. A connection that passes gauging can still carry cracking or other indications that only an appropriate NDT method can reveal. Basin pairs gauging with wet fluorescent MT and visual testing so geometry and condition are evaluated together where the scope calls for it.

Basin does not offer standalone machine-shop threading, re-cutting, or repair services. Gauging results support the customer's or responsible party's accept, re-cut, or reject decision.

Methods

NDT Methods and Capabilities Commonly Used

Ultrasonic testing of rotary shoulder connections, eddy current testing, radiography, PAUT, dry MT, fluorescent PT, and remote or borescope visual testing are not claimed as rotary shoulder connection applications unless separately confirmed for your scope.

Process

Typical Inspection Workflow

1Scope, standard, and history. We start with the connection type, applicable specification, service history, and known damage so inspection effort focuses on the most consequential areas.
2Visual examination. An inspector examines threads, seal faces, and shoulders for thread form, wear, galling, damage, and conditions that warrant further evaluation.
3API thread gauging. Where applicable to the connection and scope, pitch diameter, taper, and lead are measured and recorded against the applicable requirements.
4Surface and near-surface examination. Wet fluorescent MT is applied to suitable ferromagnetic threads and shoulders; visible dye PT is used only where material, surface condition, access, and procedure make it appropriate.
5Evaluation. Findings and gauge measurements are evaluated against the applicable acceptance criteria. The final accept or reject decision belongs to the customer or the party responsible for the equipment, based on the applicable specification, customer requirement, and documented findings.
6Documentation. Results are captured in a documented inspection record describing what was examined and gauged, what was found, and the connection identification tied to the inspection.
